Below are excerpts from their interview.

What clients value most about Fortitude:

“The availability. They like the fact that they can talk to the two business owners. They like the fact that we are aligned and that there are no commissions on anything. We care. We’re responsive. If we don’t answer the phone, we ring them back shortly thereafter. We meet as often as clients want to meet formally, but we love catching up informally. We encourage that. I think they get the sense that we love what we do, and we do.”

Mixing business and pleasure:

“We tend to have really close relationships with our clients, and I enjoy that. I’m very happy to spend weekends with them…I’m very happy to play golf with them. Lunch, coffee, go to their house.”

His adoration of Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger:

“I love those two blokes. When you are wanting to set about achieving anything in life, you’ve got to hang around great people and you’ve got to think who the best people to hang around are. I’m so thrilled that I made that decision to hang out with them every year (at Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting). There might be 40,000 others there. As far as I’m concerned, they’ve only got eyes for me. I have managed to (unfortunately for them) nearly rip the sockets out of both of their arms as they were walking past, but I’ve had the chance to touch the two great men. I’ve got an autographed book from Charlie, Poor Charlie’s Almanack. I commend that to everyone.”

The best advice he has heard:

“I remember Jerry Seinfeld saying there were three things in life everyone should live by. One is to have fun and celebrate the wins. Have a love for something. And he says it could even come down to getting a great car spot when you’re at the supermarket. It’s not often you get a great car spot! You celebrate that. The second is work your butt off. And I wouldn’t say I’m overly good at that. And the third thing is just be open and aware of what’s going on around you. Be observant. Jerry’s a classic.”
